Oily and combination skin types are characterized by an overproduction of sebum – the natural oil produced by the sebaceous glands. Due to the diverse needs of different areas of the skin, they require an individualized approach to skincare.

Combination skin combines the traits of oily and normal or dry skin – the oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) contrasts with drier or normal cheeks.

Characteristics of oily and combination skin

  1. Excess sebum – primarily visible in the T-zone, causing the skin to appear shiny and more prone to clogged pores.
  2. Enlarged pores – usually noticeable on the nose, forehead, and chin, with a tendency to develop blackheads and blemishes.
  3. Uneven texture – the oily areas may have thicker skin, while drier parts (e.g., the cheeks) tend to be more delicate.
  4. Sensitivity to external factors – such as stress, diet, hormones, or climate, which can lead to both increased oiliness and dryness.

Care for oily and combination skin

Care for oily and combination skin involves maintaining a balance between hydration and sebum control. Regular but gentle cleansing helps remove excess oil and impurities without compromising the skin’s protective barrier. Using toners that restore the skin’s natural pH and gently regulate sebaceous gland activity is essential—preferably alcohol-free to avoid dryness. Hydration is crucial, even if the skin appears oily, so a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer can help maintain balance. Regular use of exfoliants, such as enzymatic peels, supports pore cleansing and mattifies the skin, but no more than once a week to avoid dryness.
